The Feather Trade and the American Conservation Movement
from the Smithsonian Institution
Tens of millions of birds were taken at the height of
the feather-trade years, between 1870 and 1920. The two
groups most damaged by fashion hunting were the white
egrets or herons, and the small terns. One auction
record alone lists more than one million heron or egret
skins sold in London between 1897 and 1911 . . .
