It's time to think about taxes!

Wegner, LLP - CPAs and consultants has a very good web
page explaining the 1997 tax law changes:
http://www.wegnercpas.com/encyclop/97update/direct.htm

Wegner, LLP - CPAs and consultants also has a great online tax
encyclopedia. The encyclopedia is based on 1996 tax law, but
much of the information is still valid and it is a great resource.
http://www.wegnercpas.com/encyclop/96encycl/encyclop.htm

Here is another good explanation of the 1997 tax law changes:

Not many people really understand Roth IRAs. They are really
one the the VERY BEST investments you could make. Roth IRAs are not tax
deductible, but the whole thing is tax deferred and it comes
out tax free too! Here are a couple of web pages that calculate which
IRA is better for you, a regular IRA or a ROTH IRA.

Grant Thornton has a great online newletter (including past
editions). VERY useful and good info:
http://www.gt.com/gtonline/tax/tba/tbatoc.html

Lacerte software publishes tax software for CPAs. They also have a
very good website with an image map to select your state tax forms
(VERY cool). Select a state and that state's forms and links are
reflected on the right frame. Other helpful info is also
available on this web page:
http://www.lscsoft.com/links/links.htm

The Tax Prophet is a great place with lots of tax info and
other neat stuff. Be sure to check the interative tax applicactions!

Here is a GREAT place to keep informed and up to date with tax
stuff: WHAT HAPPENED? "These are tools I use to find what is happening

Here is a place that has a retirement calculator.

PPC is a company that publishes guides for accountants. They also
have some great resources on their website. Here is a very good
tax data sheet:
http://www.ppcinfo.com/nta-257c.htm

Dennis Schmidt's website has long been regarded as the best
place to go for tax resources and info:
http://www.taxsites.com/

Here is a great tax resources website:
http://www2.best.com/~ftmexpat/html/taxsites.html#contents

1040.com is another good place for individual tax info:
http://www.1040.com/

H & R Block has a pretty good site too:
http://www.hrblock.com/tax/

H & R Block even has a tax refund calculator:
http://www.hrblock.com/tax/refund/

Here is a website that lists the AFR (Applicable Federal
Rates). The site even has the rates going back to 1990:
http://www.pmstax.com/afr/index.html

HERE ARE OTHER SOURCES OF TAX HELP...
Client Valuation Services has a pamphlet called "Ca$h for your
used Clothing" that I *HIGHLY* recommend. The book is $17.95 including
shipping charges and a 1 year audit protection warranty.

"You can order a copy of the booklet by calling 1-800-875-5927.
If, after completing this booklet, you don't save an additional
$200 on your income taxes, then return it for a full refund."

HERE IS SOME HELPFUL INFORMATION FOR ELECTRONIC FILING:

There are many options for filing your tax returns electronically.
There are also many other options and programs that allow one
to file tax returns electronically. Here are some of those options:

1. If you can file a form 1040EZ, you can use the telephone to
file your tax return.
2. VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) and TCE (Tax
Counseling for the Elderly) offer *free* income tax preparation and help and
many of these sites also offer *free* electronic filing. For the VITA site
nearest you, contact the Taxpayer Education office at your local IRS office.

FYI - the main IRS phone number is 1-800-829-1040

You may also contact the American Association of Retired Persons
(AARP) to find out the nearest TCE/Tax-Aide site by calling:
1-888-227-7669.

3. Some banks and employers offer electronic filing. However, I am
not aware of any specific banks or employers offering this
service and do not know of any list of them...

4. Here is information about electronic filing of your tax
returns:
http://www.irs.ustreas.gov/prod/elec_svs/index.html
http://www.irs.ustreas.gov/prod/elec_svs/ets.html

Here are the software programs recognized by the IRS to file
tax returns online.
http://www.irs.ustreas.gov/prod/elec_svs/ol-txpyr.html#Soft

5. H & R Block and most major NON CPA income tax preparers offer
electronic filing. Many of those businesses provide electronic
filing for a fee even if they do not prepare your tax return. This is
often a better option than buying a tax preparation program that will
only be used once.

6. Even though the thought of filing your tax return online sounds
appealing, I am not a big fan of this approach especially if
you owe the IRS. If you will be receiving a refund you *might* get it a
little earlier by filing electronically and having the check
automatically deposited to your bank account. Note that you can
also have your refund automatically deposited to your bank account
without filing electronically...

Tax forms can be received by Fax from the IRS or they can also
be downloaded from the IRS web site. The faxback telephone
number is available here:

THE SPEEDTRAP REGISTRY
Planning a roadtrip? Take a look at the Speedtrap Registry
before you go. This site includes lists and helpful hints about speedtrap
locations around the world. Although the U.S. has the largest collection, there
are plenty of entries from other countries as well. Most entries include
location (latitude, longitude, and mile marker), what speed measuring
technology is used, and whether or not the car is marked. The average ticket
cost and scanner frequency are icing on the cake! The site includes
links to Web sites about driving, and a form to add your least favorite
speedtraps to the Registry.

Bill Gates doesn't own everything of import. Sure, he's got the

collection doesn't house original da Vinci manuscripts,
granted: just big, clear scans of several hundred artists' work. Harden has
assembled virtually all the masters, from Altdorfer to Wyeth,
organized in a neat, clean sidebar. Click on an artist's name
and get instant access to reproductions (viewable in either large-scale or
thumbnail versions), plus books about the artist (through
Amazon.com), histories, and related links. A great resource for
new wallpaper as well as putting an image to an artist's name.

Ocean Planet
The Smithsonian Institution's "Ocean Planet" exhibit
admirably tries to make the leap and lands, if not
with a splash, at least on reasonably solid ground.
The online exhibition contains all the text and most
of the panel designs and images found in the travelling
exhibition (currently ensconced at the Chicago Museum of
Science and Industry). Navigation is a bit obscure at first,
but once inside exhibition halls, it's quickly apparent that
text lists of exhibit subjects are the route to follow. While
Ocean Planet online necessarily lacks the intimacy and immediacy
of the real thing, it makes up for that shortcoming with sometimes
huge quantities of links to sites for more expansive
information on specific subjects. If you can't get to Oceans in Chicago, this is
obviously the next best thing.

Mangroves and coral reefs
Mangroves and coral reefs worldwide are rapidly being destroyed.
Some scientists estimate that this winter's El Nino alone will
result in a 10-20% coral reef die-off. This site describes a
well funded three-year study by the IBM International
Foundation and the Australian Institute of Marine
Science. The study is aimed at finding ways to
better manage and protect these econiches.
In addition to thorough scientific
reports and links to related resources,
you can view some dynamite .mpgs, such as
fish larvae plume simulation at Bowden Reef.
(They're in a nonstandard format, but the site
provides pertinent technical instructions and links.)

Where's the ring?
Every now and again the rings of Saturn simply
appear to disappear during periods dubbed "ring
plane crossings". The last of these occurred in 1995
and 1996 when Saturn's rings were seen edge-on from
the Earth's perspective on three occasions. Ring
plane crossings offer astronomers unique observation
opportunities as the glare from the rings drops and faint
objects near the planet are far easier to see; 13 of
Saturn's moons have been discovered during these
events. For a gallery of images from the 1995-96
crossings, plus a trove of information and images
on Saturn, visit the Saturn Ring Plane Crossings
page at NASA's Jet Propulsion Lab. The links are
extensive, some of the images stunning, and the
information solid. Be warned that there's an odd
mix of verb tenses here - some text written in
anticipation of the event, some in review of
the event. Still, given that you'll have to
wait until 2038 for the next triple ring crossing,
that's hardly a reason for not stopping by.

ScienceNet
You may have thought that only presidents, billionaires, and
007's megalomaniacal dversaries had access to a staff of, say, 11 scientists and over a 1000 volunteers eager to research and answer any imaginable question. Now that power is within your grasp! ScienceNet is an organization with such resources, ready to respond to your questions - provided that they fall within the general areas of archeology, paleontology, biology, medicine, chemistry, engineering, technology, environmental science, geography, earth science, mathematics, computer science, physics, astronomy, social science, or psychology. You may also query or browse over 5500 on-line documents that answer questions already asked. Answers are geared to the education level of the inquirer, so you needn't fear embarrassment. Articles, interviews, and radio programs are also
provided for your perusal. So was that, "add water to acid" or "add acid to water"? Don't take a chance! Ask the experts!

The tree of life
When biologists talk of phylogeny, they mean the
relationships between groups of animals - the tree of life.
Phylogenetic analysis uses many tools: morphology;
stratigraphy; cladistics; molecular analysis; and more.
Any Web site trying to cover the phylogeny of all life
had better have access to limitless resources and desk
space. The University of California Museum of Paleontology
has both. Don't expect to find the entire history of life
here, though that may be an ultimate aim. The pages here
do enough to just skim the theories, the methods, and the
phylogenetic groups. Links to special projects, like one
on vertebrate flight, enliven your visit. The sheer amount
of content and numbers of links here cannot possibly be
covered in one evening. Bookmark it, and take your time.

change improves the handling of IMAP and LDAP e-mail protocols.

Bats Online
You do know, don't you, that bats don't actually get
tangled in your hair? Nor do they attack people or
have an unusually high incidence of rabies. The Bat
Conservation International site dispels such myths
in caverns full of information about bats of all kinds
and the benefits that they provide to humans and the
ecosystem. For example, a common North American brown
bat can eat 600 mosquitoes per hour, far exceeding the
capability of our NSS corporate bug zapper (which looks
suspiciously like Arthur wielding an old 5 1/4" floppy disk).
From the tiny bumblebee bat of Thailand, weighing less than
a penny, to the giant flying foxes of Indonesia, possessed
of six-foot wingspans, over 1000 different species cover
the globe, playing a role in pollination, seed dispersal,
or night-flying insect control. This site contains bat facts,
bat workshops, bat excursions, bat magazines, bat detectors,
bat distribution, bat bridges, bat girls (sorry, wrong site),
bat earrings, bat kites, and even a bat condo that you can
build yourself!

The History of Chocolate
"The Land of Chocolate" is Homer Simpson's idea of heaven.
Willy Wonka's factory can engender a fascination more
enthralling than Oz. With over three billion pounds of the
stuff consumed annually in the United States, it seems that
more than a few of us could be considered "chocaholic".
Thanks to the generosity(!) of Emperor Montezuma (who drank
50 glasses of the stuff each day in warm, liquid form), who
shared with Cortez the wonders of the cacao tree (and you
thought Cortez was after gold!), we partake of the food
of the gods (at only around 210 calories per candy bar).
Discover the food that uses 8% of the world's sugar production.
Trace the preparation of the product from tree to candy aisle,
and examine the evidence that chocolate isn't linked to headaches,
obesity, acne, addictions, heart disease, elevated cholesterol,
diabetes, tooth decay, hyperactivity or other undesirable side
effects. (Some may dispute these findings, but they're probably
fanatics who don't want you to have any kind of fun, right?)

Turn-of-the-century Photos

From the Library of Congress:

A searchable site, the query "louisiana" returned
311 photographs made about a century ago, including
the attached of the Southern Yacht Club before 1900.

This collection of photographs from the Detroit Publishing
Company Collection includes over 25,000 glass negatives and
transparencies as well as about 300 color photolithograph
prints, mostly of the eastern United States. The collection includes the
work of a number of photographers, one of whom was the
well known photographer William Henry Jackson.

A small group within the larger collection includes about
900 Mammoth Plate Photographs taken by William Henry Jackson
along several railroad lines in the United States and Mexico
in the 1880s and 1890s. The group also includes views of
California, Wyoming and the Canadian Rockies.

How Stuff Works
It's not often that you run across a site on the Internet
that explains the science of everyday things in simple terms.
It's also not often that the site you run across will be
written by a person whose real name is Mr. Brain (no kidding).
If his name alone isn't credential enough for you, perhaps his
work as a teacher of computer science at North Carolina State
University or his authorship of ten published books will sway you.
Either way, his straightforward articles on "how stuff works" will
appeal to the curious kid in anyone.

pertinent sites of the US government

The first place to look for U.S. military information,
DefenseLINK is the official gateway to most things
armed and uniformed. Each of the nation's service
branches has its own site, from which you can link
out to a world of U.S. defense info, but this
starting point provides plenty of context on the
entire American military establishment. More
importantly, it's also the repository for Pentagon
annual reports and fact sheets on aircraft and
vehicles. Big military operations, like those in
Bosnia or the Middle East, get special attention.

http://www.defenselink.mil/index.html
Even if you aren't a foreign policy expert, the U.S.
State Department has plenty of material for you.
For instance, ever travel overseas? State offers
guidelines for Americans visiting foreign lands --
like which ones to avoid -- and advice on
passports and health care concerns. Of course, it
also serves as the voice of America's foreign
policy, and on that count it delivers speeches,
daily analysis and the official line on NATO and
other pertinent policy issues.

mp3.com

Music moguls are shaking in their Gucci's.
Mp3 is a new compression technology which allows
music to be download, stored and played on your computer.
The quality of the sound is indistinguishable form CDs.

Go to mp3.com, snoop around for awhile, download a freeware
player, and you're in business. The site also has scores of selections
of legally downloadable recordings of musicians who see this new
technology as a way to get their sound out to the masses without a
record label contract. Trouble is, if you plug mp3 in any search engine
worth its salt, it will return scores of sites from which you can download,
illegally, most of the world's copyrighted music.

A Journey of the Heart -- A Land of War
--by Paula Bock

The story of civil war in Burma, Dr. Cynthia Maung's unending
giving, and the orchid girls. Paula Bock's story and its presentation
evidence the "best use" of the internet.

Excerpt:
"ON THE BORDER, there are times when it seems like nothing can
be done; the war will never end; the orchid girls have disappeared
forever. In these dark moments, it is a comfort to know Dr. Cynthia.
She somehow rises above the violence and misery and hopelessness
around her, carrying on with her work, doing what the rest of us
cannot. Day after day, she helps people."

Very useful site which, aside from a rather
complete directory of news links, maintains
a news search engine. For example, I plugged
in "volcano" and 719 online articles from various
newspapers, magazines, etc. were listed.

The query "lewinsky" returned 13,246 hits. ;)

FAQs

The Internet FAQ Consortium
<http://www.faqs.org/faqs/>

FAQ stands for Frequently Asked Questions. It's
a compilation of questions and answers that attempt
to answer your question before you have to ask someone.
They range from being pretty cheesy to being
better than the documentation that came with
your hardware/software. Not only do they cover topics
like computers, but others such as movies, birds,
aviation etc. The Internet FAQ Consortium has placed
all the best ones on an easy to access web site.
